food and shelter.....

Community, farmers and yumminess....isn't that what it's all about?  I have become slightly addicted to the farmer's markets (as they can be on most any day in these parts) and am always in awe of the beauty of real food.  But what I really enjoy is talking to the farmers and finding out new ways to work with and honor ingredients (note the heirloom tomato and gruyere tart which will be making a repeat appearance tomorrow evening).  I also have found some amazing local cheeses, breads and  jams and  (and to-die-for hand made enchiladas and salsas which was a saving grace after managing home work and soccer for two yesterday!)  There is a great line in the beginning of the cookbook "How to Eat Supper" by Lynne Rossetto Kasper and Sally Swift:
The world is divided into two kinds of people: those who wake up thinking about what they're going to eat for supper, and those who don't." I'm decidedly in the former camp.  But enough about food (well kind of...)  My supersized encaustic piece ( 36 x 36) is a bear to work with but I really love the idea of working large.  This painting is in process and has to do with houses, communities, farms and the cosmos.  Did I mention than from our patio we can see about of billion stars and the planet Jupiter almost every night?  With my son's telescope we have been able to see three moons orbiting Jupiter and craters on the moon....how awesome is that???

More tomorrow-

P.S.:  I wish you all at least one bright star to wish upon tonight...

loving the large format of your new work... and the fresh produce looks so very yummy.

My Dad has a telescope and I have very fond memories of planet and star gazing as kids, it is just so beautiful and peaceful up there. Although I guess we see different stars down in the Southern Hemisphere then you will up in the Northern.

katherine: star gazing is such a beautiful phrase, isn't it? we have different stars and seasons but now we both have redwoods. i hope things have improved?

love where this painting is going beth. I think about your ferris wheel painting often. :) I don't know why it pops into my head, but I just loved it when I saw it at your house.
i miss my seattle farmer's markets. I go to the Green City market, but it's not the same. I am so jealous! In a good way of course. :) Star gazing in the clear skies...you can get lost in it, can't you? It's amazing what is hidden behind city lights and pollution.
Sounds like you are settling in. very happy for you. xo

i have been the recipient of several panels and am working on my first "big" one, big for me equals 22x16. It's very fun. Maybe it'll get done about the same time as yours and they will appear in blogdom together!

I wish i woke up thinking of food... I love to garden, but just not to cook. I like this time of year because you can just eat tomatoes raw and they are so good.

I like to bake, but only when the spirit moves me. It's my 3-D art.

Love the big piece... echo everyone's comments about it.
