The Neighborhood Used To Be More Colorful...
These faded beauties are mostly uninhabited now but their stories are alive in us. It is in the noisy, intoxicating chaos of the city that (generations ago)many families started their lives here in America. There was a time when kids played in the streets and people sat on their stoops just to share the vibe of lives colliding, coexisting and melting to form a more perfect union.

Ooh, I think it looks great! I like skeleton keys... are they old or reproductions? What did you use to cover the key area? I love the history of old houses... and mixing 3-d with encaustic is innovative (don't know if I've ever seen the 2 combined like this.)
You must be handy with a saw!
This is so pretty and I love the idea of combining a sense of history with this piece. Thank you so much for saying Hi on my blog :)
Hi,
The skeleton keys are real. I picked them up at a large architectural salvage place here in Chicago a couple of years ago. The key area is covered with a piece of old aluminum screen and secured with steel upholstery tacks. Having grown up in Detroit I've seen a thriving downtown slowly spiral down to a shell of it's former self...the beautiful old buildings always remind me of ghosts with stories to tell....
wow, the dark frame looks great. it brings out the other beautiful colours. the key really adds to the piece :)
Everything about this is wonderful. Great piece!
this is lovely, I love the ideas with it too. The keys are a perfect addition..
This totally reminds me of Detroit. It's so interesting to look at some of the beautiful homes here that are now abandoned, boarded up, and half burnt to the ground. I always try to imagine what life was like before the city started to deteriorate.
Anyway, love this piece! The keys are a great addition.
oh! this looks great! i love the keys on the bottom... really clever... i have a collection of those too... i'd love to see a bigger piece with keys hanging on little hooks too... (just an idea!) fun fun fun.
*** we were totally planning on going to DC, but now we will be moving! moving mid-january from upstate ny to western massachusetts...could be interesting!
Are you going!!? I do have a friend who got tickets... very jealous.
