Music and The Muse....

I find that I cannot really get anything done in the studio without music.  In fact I know I've mentioned it here before but I find I need really loud music playing to get into the creative groove.  I think it's the fact that the music allows my mind to wander just far enough to stop thinking in the day to day type way and create images that live inside me just below the surface...
Above are two paintings in progress and below a sampling of what was playing in my studio today .....

There is also lots of Wilco (hard to pick just one), Ben Kweller and Andrew Bird on my ipod.
Oh, and a friend just passed on Bon Iver's CD and I'm loving that too.  What are you listening to in your studio?

I'm right there with you. Music somehow helps me 'cross over' to the other side of myself where I can go ahead and 'do'. I've been re-visiting Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense in the studio... along with Keane, Propaganda and John Mayer this week. It's an ever changing list of randomness. I'll have the check out the music you mentioned, sounds good!

(love the cassette player, I guess that's retro now :)

what beautiful music, i loved listening to it.

i've been listening to pandora.com. my "stations" are everything from prince to opera to cole porter. i like almost everything except heavy metal. but i guess my fave is r and b. i like the pandora type web sites because i hear things i usually wouldn't listen to.

i like the first painting a lot. great shapes and color.

happy listening! Janice

i like to mix it up in the studio too...some days are filled with listening to entire cd's cover to cover and on others a truly random mix is perfect.....a friend told me about a station out of santa monica (kcrw) that i need to check out. thanks for the tutorial on using mixwit janice!

Yep I totally know what you mean...

I listened to the song you had in this post and it reminds me of a kiwi band called "the front lawn" similar sound.

lately I have been listening to David Gray.

I had a student ask me earlier in the year if he could have one of those old fashioned music things. I wasn't sure what he was talking about, a while after we sorted it out that he wanted a cassette tape.

What a great topic. It's interesting to learn what others are listening to and then viewing the work which is absolutely incorporated into it. I am such a sponge for soaking up the energy around me that I truly feed off the music while working. My tastes are all over the place but I do some of my best paintings listening to Tori Amos. I also regularly listen to Kate Bush, Claire Voyant, Aimee Mann and Duncan Sheik. Last night I came across Jorane--her vocals are in French, she plays the cello and her music is sultry and beautiful. Sometimes it's more enjoyable not to understand the language sung and just pick up the essence of the music.

Enjoyed hearing your clip!
