Your thoughts?

Today I'm working on ideas for the on-line class I'm going to be teaching in January (all of the class materials need to be ready by the end of November and so it's time for me to busy!). The really hard part is deciding what the "Encaustic Love Block" will look like. Here is one idea. This is a photo of a custom piece I did a while back but you could use a love letter or a favorite bit of poetry in her dress so everyone would create the same block but it would be unique and personal. What do you think? If you were going to take an encaustic class what techniques would you be interested in learning? I'd love to hear your thoughts....

I don't know anything about encaustic, well except that it involves wax and you wind up with this amazing ethereal looking layered painting. This being said, I think I'll want to take your class if it is for beginners. I don't know what techniques there ARE to even answer your question though, sorry.

amber- you did manage to answer a question about the level of the class. it will be for beginner's and those who have dabbled in wax : )

I love the idea of incorporating a real love letter in the dress. It's a really wonderful idea and the diversity of ever ones outcome is really going to be interesting to witness.

And as far as the encaustic techniques I would like to learn more about goes, I would like to learn how to make the layers. And mainly about how to 'heat gun' them before putting on a new layer. And not to forget what ways there are to bring on a layer. And I would like to learn how you could treat the surface of the wax, I mean like you do (and now I’m just guessing)scratching and drawing on the surface before treating it further with oil paint to leave the drawing darker and visible. How do you do this exactly and what other ways are there to work on the outside layer? Also I would like to know more about collage like techniques and encaustics.

I can go on and on to answer this question Beth, I would love to be able to participate…

i would just love to learn to the basics. except for loving the look of encaustics, i don't anything about it. the question i have is whether it is possible to use it just on paper or does it have to be a hard surface?
