Here is a small piece of an 11x14 inch painting I started today. I don't think I'll get back to it tonight and so I wanted to share it's beginning. I started by painting very thin layers of a subtle blue-gray and some medium gray oil bar and then after fusing each of those layers together added a semi transparent graphite gray layer of wax. In between the layers I also did a lot of scraping back to get a semi-flat but mottled sky. The ground where the words are layered is a smokey greenish gray that I love.
This painting is sure to change as I add more layers and details but in the end I know it will include a bed, some stars, and a few dream jars....have a good night and sweet dreams!

Wow, this process is so facinating to me! I didn't know there were so many layers... and the scraping sounds nice. I'm interested to see how it will unfold. Have you ever thought about doing a you-tube movie while you're painting? I'd love to see the process in action!
i am definitely considering teaching but am not sure i'm up to a you tube video ...but maybe???
btw-the stone collectors had a very similar beginning...
Hey Beth
I didn't realise the process was so involved either. Really interesting. We have a few students at work that are just starting to do encaustic... I will pay more attention to what they are doing.
Can't wait to see this one finished.
